A hero cannot be a hero unless in a heroic world
. (N.Hawthrone)
The year was 1947 , world saw the freedom of sub-continent from British Rule and partition of their once Jewel of the crown . In the mass population exchange and religious conflicts among people of India, mostly all Sikhs and most of Hindus fled but Christians remained in their new home called Republic Of Pakistan. Time passed , new challenges were faced and new sacrifices were required and this Minority always proved worthy of being called Pakistani but may be not enough to be called heroes. Lets take a stroll in the past and find out what the Christians of Pakistan did for their homeland despite all this hate and dejection.Let us recall the unsung heroes of my homeland Pakistan .
Have you ever heard of Bhim Sen Sachar? Surely not. In the elections to the last Punjab Assembly before independence, he was elected from the Lahore city seat in a predominantly Muslim constituency, and he won a resounding victory. The run up to 1947 was not all hate after all.Our children are never taught this in their schools, and that is why you have never heard of this great man. In the vote for Punjab joining Pakistan, much to the amazement of Muslim legislators, he backed Jinnah. Once Pakistan was made, he stayed on and was elected a member of the first Legislative Assembly of Pakistan.
The vote for Punjab joining Pakistan was tied, and the casting vote was with Punjab Assembly Speaker Diwan Bahadar SP Singha, a Christian of Lahore. Mr. Singha got three Christians to vote for Pakistan, and their efforts brought Punjab we know today as part of Pakistan. In purely ‘legislative’ terms, the Pakistan we know today came about because of the contribution of these Christians who trusted Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
Albert Robert Cornelius , One of the most Undisputed Chief Justice of Pakistan (1960) whose work includes Law and judiciary in Pakistan; Lahore Law Times Publications; (1981) The ethical basis for democracy in Pakistan; Hamdard National Foundation, Pakistan; (1971)
Many of us dine in at MM Alam road and feel proud of the greatest war pilot hero with 5 confirmed hits in 1965 war but how many of us heard about Cecil Choudary , the man responsible for equal hits and the very famous and important battle victory of Amristar Radar Station . No text book praising him , no monument for him.
Those of us from Karachi might heard of Sister Mary Emily who in true sense is Mother Teresa of Pakistan but unsung and forgotten despite her services to the community with out discrimination on the basis of cast, religion, color or social status.
Esther John, a Pakistani Nurse considered Florence Nightingale of India brutally murdered by a radical due to her change of faith.
Mervyn Middlecoat , a fighter pilot of Indo Pakistan wars and had more confirmed hits than anyother pilot including MM Alam , shot during 1971 war by Indian Fighter and his remains are still unknown, no tears no place among National Heroes.
List goes on and I can name atleast 100 others including my own family and my elders who significantly change and carve Pakistan and served well.I can safely say the christians in Pakistan played the most important role in formation of Pakistan and then defended the country as war heroes or social reformers . But all these heroes were either thrown away from country (Bhim Sen Sachar , he left Pakistan after those who voted against Pakistan became Rulers of Pakistan), brutally murdered or simply lost in the dust of time as untouchables by our historians.
Christians comprise 1.7% of Population of Pakistan yet their contribution is against the statistics They are from the lowest socioeconomic groups but never used this excuse to become pawns of extremists. Their services as Educationists, Medical Health Professionals and social workers, freedom fighters , politicians , war heroes , and true patriots are things legends are made of . May the services and sacrifices of these Minorities in Pakistan become worthy and our children may know about these unsung heroes.

Hmmm
ReplyDeleteSome of the people dislike the title Untouchables : I am sorry if I have hurt feelings of my friends but fact remains the same .
ReplyDeleteHistory, say the sages, can never be balanced. There is a need to bring to our children the reality of the great people who passed away unknown and unsung in the land of their birth. Instead of ‘lines of hate’, the new generation is surely capable of drawing ‘new lines of love’.
ReplyDeleteagree...admitted...
ReplyDeleteno noe knows many deeds done... by many people...and no one respect them here in pakistan...i dont know why this nation has become so immune to everything...may be cuz the tummy never fills up.
i still remember when i was in convent...the moral values thought to me by sister anna and sir john...they are so much in me still...that i thank Allah i have them in my life. here we never pay any regard to person who cleans our street but seriously we were punished when we dont greet sir jacob...who cleans the whole school before we come. and he is still more respectable to me who cleaned the place from where i get education.
and you yourself sharoon...you got so many words to this Pakistan...the patriotism you have...it is rare. no one sits n think about this nation as a whole now.
and it is true that Christians have much more moral values than todays present muslims.
we want religion when things not going good in our way...when things are going according to your will n wish...who cares for religion...i know many will shout on this but its true to me.
line of hate and love never matters when you are not even a human...so first thing is to be human...then the religion comes.
@ Maggie I like your ending .... first thing is to be human and humane .. and things will be changed if we keep on trying on our part no matter how small our part is .. cleaning the streets or teaching neighborhood under privileged kids( as you do) ... if we stop trying then death of Nation is inevitable , so keep the flame alive and pay homage to those people who did run the race well and fought the good fight ...
ReplyDeleteHonestly speaking, I was somehow trying to avoid this one. Not that I am embarrassed or that I dont want to talk about Christians or something. But I am just ashamed of myself. Though I am normally ashamed of myself but that's not something new because I am normally responsible for that. But a few days ago, I read something and , honestly, I had bitter taste in my mouth. I started to loathe myself that I belong to a particular group. And I could not hate myself more because I had never voiced my concerns before. Like everyone around me, I had been watching everything silently and I never bothered to protest even. And I felt that I was part of the problem as well because I let it happen. A small problem, that a weak person like myself ignores, gives birth to a social disaster. And I think I, my family, my clan, my country men... all are responsible for this. This is all that I have to say. And I dont know how to respond to your post Sharoon. Because I have not been able to think properly for last few days.
ReplyDeleteThis is what I read..
ReplyDeletehttp://blogs.tribune.com.pk/story/8452/raped-on-christmas/
And I was just sorry... ashamed.. and didnt know what to do or say. All I could say was that I am officially ashamed of my nationality and for being such a weak Muslim that I cannot kill these so-called Muslims. We think that as Muslims it is our birth right to go to heaven. But we are all going to burn… in hell… forever. Allah is not going to forgive a single Pakistani. We are not a special race. This is not Islam. What Islam are we practicing ? Which Islam gave us a right to do this to non-Muslims ? I thought in a Muslim state, it was Muslims who were responsible for safety of non-Muslims. Are these guys Muslims at all? And we who simply ignore such horrible things, are WE Muslims? We are all going to hell. We will burn. You mark my words. If non-Muslims are not safe in a Muslim state, how could we raise our voice for safety of Muslims in non-Muslim countries ? Bloody hypocrites !! Damn such Muslims man. Thanks to us, we are the worst nation on earth. I feel sick in my stomach. I wish I could kill these men and then kill myself !! And where the hell is media ? Why wouldnt they make a hype of this news now? Because this news just wouldnt sell in a bloody Muslim country !! And an 8th grader’s mistake would be published by all means !! Thanks for freedom of speech !! Nobody is going to raise their voice because our Muslim brothers will kill us for blasphemy !! I need to vomit !
@ Cheema .. I knew about this incident and believe me its not something very strange .. these type of incidents are now considered as acceptable crimes in our society , you dont want to listen a true story behind yousaf yohana or Mohd Yousaf ..
ReplyDeletebut good thing is now atleast we listen about them and tribune article is very helpful in explaining things . from where I see , I see hope as more and more people are joining the other side ... So what we can do is to hang on and keep in touch and tell others the stories never spoken before ..
this is what i mean...be a human...no matter what religion you follow.
ReplyDeletei belong to sunni family n married in shia sayyed family. many views changed...many questions arises and many are answered...but at the end of the day, the only thing that matters is to be human. my dad in law is very strict to his religion but he never said me anything cus on just this thing that i m sunni, he cannot hate me. and seriously...so many happenings like this happen but we walk with close eyes...someone tell us something..we open eyes..see and then again walk with close eyes...
i never went to data darbar...cuz in my childhood i was touched by few people there...i am not christian...but i hate going there...there no one knows me that time...so its not religion...its being human.
anyways things going in other direction...what sharoon wrote is awesome.
watch out the colors of sky when the sun sets...they express the whole day... dig the sunsets...feel the dawn... if you all get a chance, read THE OUTSIDERS by S.E. Hinton. you'll get many answers of your life..what worth and what not.
Nature's first green is gold,
ReplyDeleteHer hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.
you are gold when you are kid, like green. when you are kid, everythings new...like dawn. when you get used to everything thats a day. but still many things are green n new...find them...dig them...and lets make change at our own end...to the new dawn.
@ maggie , I have read this book and its one of my fav book and I strongly recommend it and I am glad you mentioned it , well maggie dont you think we are endangered specie in our homeland , lets devise a way to spread our view and ideology , it may be difficult but not impossible , dont you think that us , the endangered specie are last stand our country has , remember we have lost half of our country in 1971 , we dont have much to loose now , its me you and others like us who can come up with the whole ideology to rectify what previous generations have done . They say one man can make a difference why not one of us can be that one man. We can express ourselves more openly , its hard but its the only way to find people with same ideology , we refuse and condemn any other ism other than Nationalism and we have to be ambassadors of this . Time is going to change and tables will be turned and we will witness ...
ReplyDeleteLet us all unite in the name of humanity and nationalism and democracy .
